- Atteneder house in Vienna-Hernals, A

A relatively small house on a difficult site, the neighbouring buildings are very close. Consequently the building
has almost the form of a cube – that is to say it is very compact – but is sliced open at strategic points. The
organisation of the interior seems unusual at first glance: the bedrooms are downstairs, the living area upstairs.
This has to do with the density of the neighbourhood already referred to and the related problem of privacy. The
living area at first floor level detaches itself from its surroundings, which also means that the outdoor extension
of the living room, the terrace, can be used far better. And, anyhow, it is never unpleasant to be able to look at
one’s surroundings from above.
The house was built of dark, anthracite-coloured basalt concrete using boards as shuttering. Bright, tomato-red
elements provide a counterpoint.
Special feature: one wall of the house is slightly tilted. This gives the otherwise calm exterior the degree of
dynamism needed to allow the volume – despite its compactness – to deliver an exciting performance.
