Marina in Baku, Azerbaijan
description

The theme of the design was a marina for private yachts on the Caspian S ea. I t lies to the southwest of the capital, on a lovely stretch of coast dotted with numerous villas. O ut in the sea there is a natural rocky reef. The main problem to be contended with on the coast of the Caspian S ea is the oil drilling rigs. E ven though public environmental awareness is growing in A zerbaijan, these platforms remain sources of environmental pollution. W hen the wind comes from the sea it washes oil and all kind of flotsam onto the coast. T herefore it was important to develop a harbour concept that would eliminate this problem. T he response was to build a quay wall that defines the marina proper with an 800-metre-long curve. I t is built of steel and is protected by piles of large rocks. E very boat that enters the harbour has to go through a lock in which it is cleaned. T he water in this artificial harbour complex is regularly changed by means of a pipe laid at a considerable depth that extends far out to sea, so as to ensure clean water and to counteract silting up in the marina. T he buildings on the shore contain all the infrastructure facilities required for a marina complex – administration offices for the harbour master, a restaurant, everything needed for tanking and supplying the yachts.
