- EU information centre in Schengen, L

- description

Schengen is just a small village, but thanks to the EU agreement it has become world famous. Nowadays it is
visited day-in, day-out by an astonishing number of tourists who wish to see this historic location. This was the
reason for building the information centre.
The location is on the Moselle promenade, within sight of the landing stage where the ”Schengen Agreement“
was signed. The building, a low, elongated box, stands at the corner of a Baroque garden with the old Schengen
monastery and a tower, famous for the fact that Victor Hugo lived in it for a time. The function of this building
is to provide tourist information and so it contains a large, sheltered external area, a foyer with a tourism office
and a bar counter, a multi-media hall and various service rooms. The square events hall can be used for audiovisual
presentations – also with 360-degree projection – as well as for lectures and seminars. The street leading
to the building was made into a square in which plaques from each of the EU countries were laid. The building
itself has a rendered façade made of Moselle sand and lime cement, in front of which a second green skin – ivy,
Virginia creeper – has been made. The new area of the outdoor space – there are some wonderful mature trees
here – was planted with laurels.
